FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (Fuendetodos, 1746 – Burdeos,  1828).

He studied in the studio of José Luzán. In Roma he was looking into the italian barroc. When he has installed in the Court, started to paint tapestry cartoons for Royal Tapestry Factory under the control of Anton Raphael Mengs with whom he had a difficult relationship. In 1785 he started to work for the king Carlos III and in 1799 for the king Carlos VI. In this period he painted a lot of portraits. The serious illness that Goya suffred in 1793 left him deaf, this fact changed his view to the society. In “Los Caprichos” he started to show its negative side: the corruption, the prostitution, the superstition and the witchcraft, the anti-clericalism. After the war of 1808 against to napoleonic¡’s France, Goya created the huge serie of etchings known as “Los desastres de la Guerra”, in which the violence, the coldness, the misery were reflected... When the absolutism was installed in the country, Goya decided to emigrate to Burdeos where he passed his last years and painted his last work “La Lechera de Burdeos”.

He is considered as a first modern painter, which works influenced such art movements as impressionism and expressionism.

In the Gallery we have the etching series “Los Caprichos”,  “Los desastres de la Guerra”, “Proverbios” and “Tauromaquia”.
