JEAN-BAPTISTE HUYNH (Châteauroux, 1966).

Jean-Baptiste Huynh was born in Châteauroux in 1966, of a French mother and a Vietnamese father. Now he lives and works in Paris.Self taught and independent photographer, he makes the editions of his works by himself. The character of this young artist can be summed up in two words: perfectionism and determination. His skills come from both insight and clarity of vision. Huynh’s thematic preoccupations include the face — and the human gaze in particular — the play of light, the sense of timelessness, and the attempt to capture infinity. His photographs are the product of a highly subtle distillation of form and light. The resulting essence is so pure that the sole trace of its creation is the sublime technique.Jean-Baptiste Huynh has exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, including the Sonnabend Gallery (New York), the Beyeler Gallery (Switzerland), Camera Work Photo Gallery (Berlin), the National Foundation for Photography (Italy), the Moscow House of Photography (Russia), the Osaka University of Art (Japan), the European House of Photography (Paris). Galeria Joan Gaspar presents his work in Spain.In 2002, the Maison Européene de la Photographie presented the exhibition Yeux along with a book gathering major portraits by Jean-Baptiste Huynh. The Villa Médicis Prize and the Kodak Prize stand among his several awards. In 2006, the National School of Fine Arts of Paris devoted a retrospective to Jean-Baptiste Huynh, Le Regard à l’oeuvre, which brought together his studies of the human face in a variety of world cultures. In 2012, the Louvre invited Huynh to show Rémanence, a collection of his photographs inspired by objects in the Museum’s collection.
